The vast territory of Argentina spans 4,000 kilometers from north to south, encompassing biomes that range from lowland rainforests to Andean deserts. This unique journey, specially designed for those who enjoy general natural history and nature photography, covers an incredible diversity of sites and habitats. We will explore the Pampas grasslands and thorny woodlands north of Buenos Aires, focusing mainly on two premium birding locations: Ceibas and Otamendi, where we’ll look for birds like Straight-billed Reedhaunter, Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper, White-naped Xenopsaris, Lark-like Brushrunner and Southern Screamer among others.
After birding the Pampas, we will drive to northeastern Argentina, where we’ll spend time in the Province of Corrientes exploring Iberá Marshes –the largest wetland in Argentina. This unique ecosystem is the realm of several bird species with highly restricted distribution ranges in Argentina. Mammals and reptiles are also abundant in Iberá. Black-and-gold Howler Monkey is spotted regularly in the surroundings of our lodge, Marsh Deer is a common sighting in the marshlands and Capybaras thrive in every lagoon, sharing their habitat with Caymans and Yellow Anaconda.
Birders will surely enjoy this area very much. Birds like Strange-tailed Tyrant, Ochre-breasted Pipit, Giant Woodrail, Long-winged Harrier and Scarlet-headed Blackbird are commonly seen along the different roads and trails in Iberá, but birds species here are present by the hundreds, offering both great bird watching and photo opportunities.
After exploring Iberá, we will continue our overland journey towards the Province of Misiones, crossing the Campos, a restricted area of savannas in smooth hills with patches of forests. The wide diversity and vast numbers of wetland bird species are overwhelming in this area. This is the habitat where endangered birds like Saffron-cowled Blackbird and the gorgeous Streamer-tailed Tyrant live.
Misiones is the province of mighty Iguazú Falls, and our plan is to spend time here watching and photographing the unique fauna and flora of the Interior Atlantic Forest. Great Dusky Swifts fly overhead and into the falls by the thousands in the area of Devil’s Throat, where the highest and most impressive falls stand. Such exotic birds as Toucans, mixed flocks of colorful Tanagers and many other rainforest dwellers along with nearly 500 species of astounding butterflies will welcome us into this fabulous rainforest paradise. Mammals are both attractive and diverse here. Coatis are commonly spotted around the visitor areas of the falls, and Capuchin Monkeys are often seen along the forest trails. There are many marsupials here, with some tiny, secretive species like Ihering’s Three-striped Short-tailed Opossum, and larger, more conspicuous ones, like White-eared Opossum. Deer live in these forests as well, and chances are high for close encounters with three different species of Brocket-Deer. The list of mammals of Iguazú is extensive, and we hope to see many during this part of the tour.
